How 'diverse' is your life now?
by AK - Jeff inwhat have you done with your life, what friends have you made, what goals have you pursued, that were impossible to do as a witness?.
i know that in our case, we have few friends yet, due to spending most of the past few years 'healing' from the borg-torture.
i discuss politics and religion freely with many of them.

I now think for myself, I can now make friends with people that I like, rather than people with whom I share the same mental illness, I have persued an education, gained a great career, met a wonderful woman, lost a controlling and abusive father and generally found myself.
It's taken me a long time to get there, I was disfellowshipped when I was 18 in 1990 and would say that it took me over 10 years to really find myself. I am not sure whether that was because I missed out on a proper upbringing and was 18 when I left, or whether it is a reflection on me and my personality. I will say that it has taken a long time to work out how to really deal with people and make real friends.
I have made alot of friends through forums such as this one, in fact I met one of my closest friends through this place. I think it is the most frightening and difficult thing we face when we free ourselves, to find friends and people to surround ourselves with. Being a JW isolates you from people in such a way that you have very little common ground with which to start friendships and little in the way of terms of reference for what a real friendship is, without the relationship being conditional.

Any one have stories on the Bristol (UK) assembly hall?
by truthseeker in.
i didn't personally take part in the building of this assembly hall, but i did know one of the brothers who helped with the design of it.. i also have a brochure of the assembly hall itself, detailing the legal obstacles that had to be overcome in order to build the hall.. i've not seen the hall personally, but understand it is a unique design.. did anyone help out on this building project?

I've been there, I actually lived about 2 miles down the road for the last 5 years we were in the UK and met up with my father there for one of their assemblies when I was considering getting reinstated.
It's quite an impressive building if you are into that sort of thing, they basicallly dug a bloody great hole in the ground and buried the assembly hall, mainly because the locals did not want to see it, and if I remember rightly then one of the legal requirements was that it could not be seen from the M5.
Unfortunately they were spouting the same old crap from the stage, some things never change.
What I did find interesting was that the place cost a fortune to build and bethel had to basically strong arm a number of congregations into using the hall (and therefore contributing to it's cost) from quite some distance away. I know that congs from as far afield as Bournemough are using the hall despite it being a good 3 hour drive away. -

What's Your Opinion Of Cops Making Roadblocks Just 2 See If Someone's Drunk
by minimus inare you for it or against it?

Here they have roadblocks on the freeway and breathalise EVERY driver, quickly and efficiently. It is a very good idea because you DO NOT have the "right" to endanger other road users.
It makes me laugh when you Americans bleat about your precious rights yet are all for stricter laws pertaining to gay marriage and abortion. -

Dansk, don't you just love the way the dubs manage to take a tragedy and twist it to their hatred filled teachings?
I got so sick to death of the bitterness and lack of any humanity in their teachings, it is infuriating that they get their jollies out of other people's suffering. I lost count of the number of rediculous stories you would hear at meetings or conventions where African villages would be attacked and the one guy who had not bothered going to the meeting that sunday got killed because of his lack of faith, I suspect they were all BS used to berate the flock.
Are they still completely unprepared to do humanitarian or charity work?

A Bad experience with JW is a permit for SIN?
by El Mariachi ini've been reading some sad experinces here... i dont see anyone talking about the bible... only how misserables the organization made their lives... ok ...so because of that...now i have permission to smoke marijuana and commit fornication?
this sounds pretty much like aa... and everybody having his/her personal "superior power" who is giving them the permit to do whatever they want...
i've been df for 4 years now and also dont agree with some jw teachings... why instead of blaming the wt for everything dont we look for the real truth in the bible and make things right.

we've all been there; the feeling of being robbed does pass, and then you start enjoying the feeling of being able to discover your own direction through life, and find that you discover who YOU are and what YOU think about things.
It's tough to begin with but accept and move on, you can only control what happens today and tomorrow, not yesterday. In time it will be nothing more than a painful memory.
